European Greens stand in solidarity with Members of Macedonia's Parliament and journalists attacked

Commenting on the recent events in Macedonia’s Pariament, European Green Party Co-chairs Reinhard Bütikofer and Monica Frassoni said:

“European Greens strongly condemn the storming of the Macedonian Parliament by violent nationalist thugs. We stand in solidarity with the members of Parliament and the journalists that were attacked. We call upon all sides in Macedonia to display prudence and to refrain from violence.

“The political responsibility for the escalation of tensions in Macedonia rests with former Prime Minister Gruevski and President Ivanov who have been unwilling to honor the outcome of the recent Parliamentary elections, thus preventing SDSM Leader, Zoran Zaev, from forming a new Government for which there would be majority support in the Parliament. The intransigence and blockade against due political process must be terminated immediately. We call upon High Representative Federica Mogherini and Commissioner Hahn to take all efforts possible to facilitate a breakthrough and the resumption of political normality in Macedonia.

“European Greens express solidarity with our Macedonian member Party DOM and in particular Member of Parliament Maja Morachanin and Party Leader Liljiana Popovska. They can rely on our support in their valiant struggles.”
