CENTRAL EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY: EUROPEAN GREENS CALL ON HUNGARIAN GOVERNMENT TO WITHDRAW LAW CHANGE

As a law put forward by the Hungarian Government tries to force Central European University (CEU) founded by the Hungarian-American George Soros to shut its doors, European Green Party Co-chairs Reinhard Bütikofer and Monica Frassoni said:

“Since its creation, CEU has been a beacon of academic freedom, European values and has engaged with sustainability very deeply. It is now a renowed international hub of cooperation and it has contributed not only to Budapest and Hungary as a whole but to the whole European family providing important education opportunities to young people from wider Eastern Europe, who had few other options.

“CEU is a crucial actor in the fight against extremism, climate change, illiberal deformation of democracy and in creating a free and responsible Europe. This is why we call on the Hungarian government to withdraw the higher education law change aimed at CEU.”
